Glossary
Short explanations of terms that come up regularly in the articles below, no jargon.
- VvE (Dutch building/owners' association)
- The legal entity through which all owners of an apartment building jointly manage the building, including shared spaces such as a parking garage. Decisions about sharing parking spaces go through the members' meeting.
- Parking pressure
- How closely demand for parking spots approaches or exceeds the available capacity. Often more a distribution problem (empty spots unavailable at the wrong moment) than a true shortage.
- Double use
- Letting the same parking spot be used by different people at different times, for example a spot sitting empty during the day because its owner is at work. The basis for shared parking and for a lower, justified parking standard.
- Parking standard
- The number of parking spaces a municipality requires per home in new developments, set out in the zoning plan. Demonstrable double use of existing spaces can justify a lower standard.
- Car-free / car-light district
- A new development deliberately designed with few private parking spaces per home (often well under 1 per home), combined with shared mobility and good public transport.
- Charger hogging
- Leaving a car parked at a charging spot after charging has finished, blocking other residents from charging. A common friction point once a building association's garage gets a shared charging point.
- GDPR (privacy in shared parking)
- The European privacy law that also applies once a building association processes personal data to share parking spaces, such as names, spot numbers and booking times.
